Deadcember: Week 4

Wow, what a journey that was! Deadcember 2017 has been an absolute blast I have to say. Thank you for joining me on what was a bit of a roller coaster of a project. I gotta say I didn't think I was going to complete it in time especially with the holiday season encroaching. But I managed a good few hours late into the night and maintained a decent social life at the same time.

'Dunno how I did that!'

Deadcember: Week 3

As regular as clockwork, dontcha love it? The Nightmare Legion start to take shape with some new arrivals, and I get some reinforcements in the form of a mighty Necromancer and a deadly Shroud who both make muster. Deadcember is coming to a close... lets see if I can pull this off.

'That's what she said.'

Deadcember: Week 2

The Undead army is starting to get fleshed out a bit (pun intended). Zombie Dragon done, Corpse Cart done, Mummies done... BOOM! Probably the nastiest and quickest paint jobs I have ever done but it just seems to suit old school Undead creatures down to the ground. Particularly the dark styling on the Mummies, they seem to have really come into their own with a muted palette.

'Get off my train!'

Deadcember: Week 1

Here we go then! So Ghosts done, Kemmler done, Krell done, mounted Wraith done, Giant Bat and rider done, some Knightmare Legion done. This aint half bad is it? I read a great article over at RealmofChaos80s about painting motivation and it just stuck with me. Certainly seems to have had an effect.

'The best thing about Heroquest is the Barbarian!'

Happy Deadcember!

Welcome back Nerglings and a very happy Deadcember to you and yours! This month I delve into dark majik and get to grips with the Undead. There will be ups and downs along the way I'm sure but the end result is a complete Undead army by the end of Deadcember/December. I know it's a bit of an ask but I'm pretty confident that I can pull it off, they don't call me the Nergling for nothing right?

Making Bad: Frost Giant

Today we are taking a look at the awesome Otherworld Miniatures Frost Giant. He truly towers over the opposition with his white glazed eyes, huge battleaxe made by the Dwarfs and his leather armour pieces.

I struggled with basing this guy, he feet are extremely far apart for such a compact miniature. I was going to base him on an oval or square base but I think the need to keep the collection all on round bases won out and I plugged for a large round base.

25 Years in the Hobby

After many years of collecting and painting miniatures I have finally hit the inevitable 25 year mark. To celebrate I run through a few of my favourite old classic games, I highlight some fun models and I give you the lowdown on what is going to happen in 2018. Enjoy!

Making Bad: Bottlesnortle the Giant

The super plastic Giant kit really lends itself well to conversions, check out this effort to make a named Giant. I chose Bottlesnortle as I thought he was the most characterful of the 3 named Giants.

If you have a converted plastic Giant then please drop a link in the comments below and share him!

Making Bad: Chaos Battle Standard

A fantastic Chaos Battle Standard painted by Jonas Wideen. I then painted the bloke and based him once the banner was done. Bit of a mesh of two very different styles, my messy chaotic madness and his super fine high contrast well cooked detail. I really like the effect we managed to create and this really does stand out as one of the best miniatures in my collection because of our efforts.

Making Bad: Cursed Ettin

The mighty Cursed Ettin elopes into view as the battle commences far below. His gangling arms and legs carrying him across the field in just a few great movements.

"MURGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"

Making Bad: Glutton Demon

A showcase video detailing my awesome Glutton Demon from Creature Caster. This thing has to be seen to be believed. Enjoy!

Sunday, 1 October 2017

Making Bad: Chaos Lord

This is quickly becoming Chaos Lord Mondays isn't it? Enjoy another crazy Chaos conversion made from a Gamezone Chaos Lord, a Ral Partha Headhunter lobster monster and a Games Workshop oval cavalry base.

"Had to have some GW pieces in there somewhere dint weh?"

Sunday, 24 September 2017

Making Bad: Chaos Rust Lord

The indomitable Chaos Rust Lord, quite unlike any other Chaos Lord this behemoth hails from a planet of solid iron. A super model from Scibor miniatures, enjoy his rust encrusted armour and weaponry!

Sunday, 17 September 2017

Making Bad: Avatar of Gluttony

A mixture of nightmarish demon and what once was a mere mortal. The Avatar of Gluttony makes for a perfect Herald of Nurgle. Enjoy!

Making Bad: Mounted Chaos Lord

The greatest of Chaos Lords are gifted powerful familiars and creatures by their patron gods. Those that impress will be lavished with armour and weaponry to rival that of any other race. To become such a champion of the gods he must dedicate his life to bloodshed and work tirelessly towards furthering his patrons goals.

This particular Chaos Lord has been given an indestructible Brass Steed, bathe in his glory!

Making Bad: Great Unclean One

I have been hankering to build my own custom Great Unclean One for a long time now. Having spent my youth melting polystyrene for various pieces of scenery, I was pretty confident that would make a good start point for this model. I got a polystyrene ball and liberally applied poly cement to the surface and allowed it to melt down creating huge expanses of exposed flesh. Once that had dried I started to build areas back up with milliput and pieces from the bits box. I used a head from Myproyec and hands from Tamurkhan. The rest as they say is history! Hope you like him and if you haven't already, a sub on YouTube would be greatly appreciated!

Sunday, 27 August 2017

Making Bad: Plague Factory

One of my best conversions I think. It is Tamurkhan's giant toad with a load of pipework and chimneys on its back and a Palanquin of Nurgle fused together in a hellish mesh of beast, demon and machine! Enjoy!

Sunday, 20 August 2017

Making Bad: Storm Giant

This guy has proven extremely difficult to video for some reason! Every time I sit down to video him something happens to ruin the recording, either the light changes, I accidentally walk across the shot, there is too much shaky cam going on with the tripod or I end up not letting the camera sit on him for the right amount of time!

Nevertheless I managed it. A mighty Storm Giant makes his way into the collection, hope you enjoy!

Making Bad: The Hobbit Trolls

The comical yet dangerous Trolls from The Hobbit. A set of three plastics from Games Workshop, pretty nice miniatures all told I would say. They go together quite well, although I did a bit of sculpting over the joins just to make them more cinematic and less obviously miniatures. Enjoy!

"Ohhh that's beautifully balanced that is!"

Chaos Army Progress

I wasn't lying when I said I was building a Chaos Army honest! Just check out the progress pics below for proof!

Four more Minotaurs need to be painted to beef up the two shown and another three knights to flesh that unit out.

Still need to finish off the pack animals for the Baggage Train...

One regiment of C35 Chaos Knights/Warriors, no duplicates, we don't like duplicates! Each has 3 gold plated cogs on his base and some static grass.

This old Dragon Ogre is one of my favourite models. He is probably your favourite too, what a classic! I just had to include him and change his base from an oval to a chariot base.

Knights looking kinda shiny, Pantheon of Chaos shields suit them rather nicely, I will give them some sharper highlights before final varnish I think to bring out their colours a bit more.

Minotaur's on the march, once this awful wet weather sorts itself out I will be able to final varnish and sort out the banner for the battle standard, in the meantime he is walking around with a big twig.

Hollow Lipped Bases

I have been searching for a set of cheap but quality hollow swamp/lipped bases to mount my Speciality Set Chaos Knights/Warriors into and I have finally found just the jobby! I give to you eM4 Miniatures 25mm square lipped base. Glory be.

I didn't think owning a simple set of bases could be this life affirming. But it is, especially when you have been searching for them for ages and they just leap out of eBay at you!

Mounted in a base and ready to paint, this Chaos Warrior is ready to rock and roll.

Chaos Baggage Train

As I alluded to in the previous post the Baggage Train is one of my favourite parts of this army and I just had to get it done straight away! As you can see our hero has quite a haul in his cart, certainly a lot of good stuff that any aspiring Chaos Lord would be interested in: A giant mushroom, a large rusty artefact and a bizarre chrome ball of unknown origin. He might want to trade some of that loot for an upgrade to his horse though as this one is starting to smell...

Don't worry I'm not a complete heathen I will be edging the bases with black and giving them a matt varnish eventually!

Goblin Captain issuing the Evil Lords orders whilst having a swig of extra strong tonic, perks of the job or so I'm told.

Speciality Set Chaos Warriors/Knights

Three Speciality Sets worth of Chaos Knights and Warriors, some almost finished others really no where near finished. These are some of my favourite characters produced by Citadel, ahh integral bases my old foe!

A unit almost finished, just some rust effects, some highlights, edged bases and then varnish to go.

Can you spot which one is almost finished?

Gotta love insane eBay seller paint jobs, hell they could even pass as 'pro-painted' right?

What a sorry state these boys are in, they really need a coat of paint and some nice bases!

Building a Realms of Chaos Army

I have been collecting miniatures for almost 25 years now and I am ashamed to say I have never built myself a true Realms of Chaos style army. So I figured now is a good a time as any to begin!

Being that my family and I are moving house soon I needed a good sort of my miniatures anyway so I began building units on the floor as I came across the models. I thought I maybe able to make at least one unit of each of the main races.

To my surprise I had enough Beastmen to make 3 units of 15, them being armed with two hand weapons, hand weapons and shield and a slightly smaller Ungor style unit with again hand weapons and shields. They are made up of several ranges worth of models, mostly Citadel, Midlam Miniatures, and some Ral Partha pieces.

I was adamant I wanted a Baggage Train as I have always loved the idea of this band of misfits trailing the main body of the army, picking up things left behind, harvesting any poor souls that may have escaped the clutches of the Beast herds and generally looking skanky. For this I plugged for the Midlam Miniatures wagon and rider and some beasts of burden, an Evil Lord and a retinue of a Goblin Captain, Orc Spearman and an Empire Pike-man from Citadel.

The Beasts are backed up with some major muscle in the form of a Minotaur herd led by a Minotaur Lord from Midlam Miniatures, in my opinion the best Minotaurs ever sculpted.

To give the army some faster elements I opted for a Chaos Chariot from Citadel and a unit of Chaos Knights from Ral Partha Europe with Pantheon of Chaos shields.

To help with the clean up of the battlefield after the melee I thought a unit of Thugs might go down well so I bought a couple more and managed to make a small unit of 10, they are a mixture of Citadel and Ral Partha Europe miniatures.

I found out my old Essex Miniatures 'Giant' who will be used as a lone Ogre as a gap filler.

To support this I opted for a couple of magicians in the form of: a mounted Chaos Sorcerer from Essex Miniatures and a Beastman Shaman from Midlam Games.

My Chaos Lord is a Mortal Champion from the Pantheon of Chaos.

Note: After this photo was taken I came across 3 Speciality Sets of Chaos Knights and Warriors and just had to include them in the line up! So 2 units of 20 Chaos Warriors too!

Making Bad: George the Giant

George the Giant, kinda cute looking isn't he? One of the earliest Giant models available, I think he was first released in 1982, it's kind of rare to find him in any good condition these days as his club has a tendency to snap off, so I feel quite happy to have found him still in one piece!

Sunday, 23 July 2017

Making Bad: The Forgeworld Giant

If anyone remembers this guy then please leave a comment below! A few years ago someone at Forgeworld had a stab at redesigning his head and absolutely fluffed it up. So I just had to get this version of him, it took a bit of sourcing on eBay but I eventually found him living in Italy (like many old school wargamers).

Sunday, 16 July 2017

Making Bad: Mierce Giant

If you have been in the hobby for a fair while now you will notice that scale creep has been sneaking into the miniatures. What is scale creep? It's where over time models get made larger and larger in an effort to either look more impressive or to cram more detail on to the sculpt. I'm all for Orcs looking big and bulky but when your regular Orcs are the same size as Ogres you have a problem. Just take a look at some of the Giants from the 80's, they are smaller than some Ogres and indeed Orcs of today!

To that end you need a Giant that will stand head and shoulders above any of those guys, a real centrepiece of a model. Mierce have kindly provided that with an absolute huge Giant! Enjoy!

Sunday, 9 July 2017

Making Bad: Cachtorr the Giant

Cachtorr one of the Giants of Albion set, there are two but I haven't got around to finishing the other guy yet. He came without hands when I bought him on eBay so I will have to do a bit of rescue sculpting I think!

Sunday, 2 July 2017

Making Bad: More Meier Giants

Some more Giants for you. This time it's the classic and rather small Tom Meier Giants. Compared to current models they are probably about the same size as Ogres, in fact I think some of the new Orc models may actually be bigger! Oh scale creep where would we be without you? We would still have Space Marines standing 28mm tall...

Sunday, 25 June 2017

Making Bad: Hill Giant

the super dynamic looking Hill Giant he is a Dungeons and Dragons collectors edition sculpt moulded in a soft Forgeworld style resin. I really enjoyed making him as he is one of the most characterful Giants in my collection.

Sunday, 18 June 2017

Making Bad: Gigantic Firelord

The mighty Gigantic Firelord armed with a huge pick and wearing heavy armour! A fearsome opponent I think you will agree.

Sunday, 11 June 2017

Making Bad: Cloud Giant

The fab Ral Partha Cloud Giant, a glorious model from the good old days! One of the lankiest Giants with his long gangly arms and legs, he has a bit of a Popeye look to him with his big calves and forearms.

Sunday, 4 June 2017

Making Bad: Marauder Giant

The huge Marauder Giant, this guy despite being a product of the 90's still dwarfs many miniatures of today. He is almost solid metal, just his torso being hollow.

I received him in a hell of a state and had to pin him back together and repaint him in my dark style to match my other Giants. I think he came out pretty nice all round. Of course there are always things you can do to improve things but if I did constantly try to improve all my models I would never get anything else done!

Sunday, 28 May 2017

Making Bad: Tom Meier Giants

Some of the fantastic Tom Meier Giants produced in the late 80's. These fellas are lanky, deformed and some may say ugly, in fact most would say ugly! But I think they are fab little characters and they flesh out my Giant horde with some troops to boot.

My favourite one is the one with the stone axe and wolf pelts, he is a pretty cool guy.

Sunday, 21 May 2017

Making Bad: Warhammer Giant

The Warhammer Giant, he is the last of a dying breed being cast in metal! As with all my Giants he is based on a cogged base and is in my signature grimy, gritty style.

See if you can find the Hobbit strapped to him...

Sunday, 14 May 2017

Making Bad: The Citadel Giant

The mightiest of the Giants the Citadel Giant, cast in solid lead except for the torso which is two pieces (signed on the inside by Alan Perry the sculptor).

He comes with 5 heads, 4 hands and 3 victims. Unfortunately I haven't finished the victims and spare heads yet, but he is getting there...

The video below shows off what I have managed to do so far and I think you'll agree the set up is much nicer than my older videos. We have the technology!

Sunday, 7 May 2017

Making Bad (Series 3)

The 3rd series of 'Making Bad' following my endeavours in modelling and painting fantasy and science fiction miniatures is coming soon, stay tuned!

300 Subs Special: Slambo

Thank you so much for the 300 Subs guys, I really appreciate the support! Please check out my celebratory video below where I burn, drill and generally destroy the new Slambo miniature.

Sunday, 12 February 2017

Making Bad: Giant Chaos Battering Ram

The beast is done! Long live the beast! Finally after much procrastination and having a few stern talks with myself in the mirror I buckled down and finished off the mighty Giant Chaos Battering Ram. I'm really quite happy with how it turned out.

I think my favourite pieces are the addition of hinges to the roof tiles to give a more structured and armoured look to the roof, the use of chain to suspend the ram itself (that was a pain in the arse gotta admit) and the wheels, they turned out great!

Sunday, 5 February 2017

Giant Chaos Battering Ram

Well it's almost here, just putting the final touches to the crazy beast now! I really can't wait to get this up on YouTube for you guys.

Sunday, 29 January 2017

Get it Painted! Giant Chaos Battering Ram (Part 4)

Progress on the Giant Chaos Battering Ram is slow. I have taken to gluing random pieces of milliput to my rams enormous base and painting rude daubing everywhere...

Sunday, 22 January 2017

Get it Painted! Giant Chaos Battering Ram (Part 3)

It feels like I am moving backwards with this project sometimes. There is so much left to do! I wonder if Tony Ackland designed this model to be so fiddly on purpose, just to see who had the patience to build and fully paint one!

Sunday, 15 January 2017

Get it Painted! Giant Chaos Battering Ram (Part 2)

Getting there slowly but surely, finally got some pieces completed! Going well, going strong, keep going!

Sunday, 8 January 2017

Get it Painted! Giant Chaos Battering Ram (Part 1)

Boom! New massive project has begun, wish me luck oh cruel and mighty gods of glue and paint. Grant me the strength of my youth so that I may finish this model with my sanity in check! Ok, here we go!

Happy New Year!

Anyone that reads this blog. I wish you a productive and happy year, may your paintbrushes never fray, your aim with your white eye dots be true and your varnish dry clear!
