Sydney large

Well we made it to Sydney, dropped in on Brett and Annette met their dog Ranger and crashed for a couple of nights. Today was our first recce into Sydney to see what all the fuss is about. Rob wasn't too impressed I have to say.

Here is a snap of the bridge, hopefully near to where we will be standing tomorrow night for New Years 2009/10!

Lang Lang

Last photo before we start the slog up to Sydney! So here it is, another classic rocky outcrop plus seascape deal. That's your lot, see you in a few days if we can find some internets! Happy Christmas!

More Melbourne

We found the famous? Metal Blokes in downtown Melbs. They are kinda kooky looking businessmen walking about. There are a lot of different sculptures in the city, they must have a big budget for art... We also saw the coming of the saviour in the sky too, so overall a good day!

Wednesday, 23 December 2009

So we made it to Melbourne which is about 4000km from our start point back in Perth not a bad city, a bit artsy and all that. The plan is to stay here for a couple of days, then move on along the coast road and on to Sydney ready for New Years. Wish us luck!

Geelong chemical factory fun

Found this in the middle of nowhere (like most things in Australia I suppose) it looked pretty cool so we took some pics of it.

Port Fairy

A manly name or what? Despite its lack of manly name, I took a great photo of a pair of birds on one of the floating docks. The weather as usual was stunning!

Portland beach

Just look at that for an awesome beach, shame about the seaweed on the sand but otherwise amazing. This photo was taken near the town of Portland.

Beach camping

Seems like a nice place to camp for the night! Probably not the safest thing you can do, not knowing the height of the water at night but whatever, what's the worst that can happen?

Amazing dusk sky

A fantastic night sky before a dinner of beans and sausages, happy days.

Night driving

So we have been on the road for a week now, tempers are getting frayed, food is getting samey and the Mystery Machine is still dragging us from camp site to camp site. This is one hell of a trek! We are certainly making good time at the moment. Hitting Port Augusta and then down to Adelaide over the next couple of days. What an epic!

Iron Knob

Best place name in Australia! We also saw Optimus Prime today but this pips him to the post for best photo.

Nullabor Highway

So we stayed at Norseman (to our detriment) last night, didn't sleep very well. But now we are out of there so goodo! Nullabor Highway, the longest straight in Australia here we go!

Monday, 14 December 2009

So we made it to Norseman, on the map it seems to be pretty much in the middle of nowhere! It definitely feels like nowhere... Creepy as hell, like a town that died 40 years ago. A couple of people still try to keep it ticking over to no avail, whilst the dust bowl consumes the town.

Esperance breakfast

We found a rather handy bbq along the road near Esperance so we figured we should make use of it... Can't have that free fuel fall into the hands of raiders!

Fisherprice my first forest fire

We were driving along and saw some smoke rising in the distance, naturally we thought it was a bonfire, little did we know we were driving towards a forest fire! We stopped in a large car park and had breakfast, Rob brushed his teeth on the telescopic wheely chair and then we sat and watched as the forest fire came up to the edge of the car park. Insane!

Thursday, 10 December 2009

Away we go! First stop on our adventure around the South Coast of Australia: Augusta. As you can see the weather is great, the water is super warm (I went for a swim). The roads are epicly long so this is going to be one wicked journey. Not bad for somewhere to camp...

Mystery Machine

So Rob managed to get us a Mystery Machine, the beast can be seen below. A masterpiece of engineering the 1985 Toyota Tarago is a can do van, complete with steering wheel, brakes and a single bed in the back. Ours came with fishing line and a broken surfboard too. Sweet!

Freemantle Prison

Built to house criminals from the old world, Freemantle Prison was not a friendly place to its residents. Initially convicts were actually of good character in that they were to be used as colonists on release, however eventually the prison was used to house less desirable and substantially more dangerous inmates. It used convict labour between 1851-59. Then in 1886 it was transferred to local government control and the sentencing and imprisonment of local criminals was allowed. This did not really change the ethos of the prison until new administration practices started to come in as late as the 1960's. Administered by a 'comptroller general' which is the best job title ever; Freemantle Prison was actually utilised right up until 1991 when it was replaced by the new maximum security Casuarina Prison.

Rob and I have got a job leafleting in the local area to get some cash money together for our trek to Sydney in a couple of months. I also got a job selling car wax to people that didn't need it, that didn't really sit well with me so I packed that in and now we are running around the local area pestering people with leaflets! Happy days!

On a side note we rescued a girl in a car after she decided it would be fun to drive full speed into a sunken drain and destroy one of her tyres. Fortunately we were on hand to give her some assistance and we had her wheel off and changed in no time. Good stuff.

Ned Kelly?

Is that a famous person here? No idea. These Australian's eh?

Time's up!

Well that's the end of my US travels for now, I fly to Perth West Australia later to stay with friends and family. Rob and I will be looking at buying a camper van and driving around the South Coast in good time!

Cheers US you have treated me well. Here is a picture of two people I don't know.

Still in Vegas...

Turns out my debit card has run out and I am living on my credit card!

I sent off for it and it's in the post so for the meantime I am grounded here in Vegas whilst I wait. I did get a fully comped meal from the Sahara Hotel manager so I had lobster, prawns, a burger with fries, milkshake and a beer, why not? Had a walk around the Venetian, quite nice!

Thursday, 30 July 2009

If you ever go to Vegas there are some rules you should abide by. Don't buy drugs, don't forge your own money and don't get sun burnt... Ted certainly tried to do all of them, good man! Here is his attempt at forging a $10 bill.

Michael Jackson

So Michael Jackson passed away a month ago, I figured I would go pay my respects by taking a picture of his Hollywood star. Unfortunately the madness surrounding his death still hasn't died down, as can be seen by the crowd around his star in the picture below. It has been totally crazy since his death, it's almost like a religious leader has passed away.

Anyway here is a pic of his star with accoutrements.

Beverly Hills

Dan and Ted, a couple of good blokes I met in San Fran, and I met up again in the hostel in LA. We figured we needed to get out and explore the area so we got on a Beverly Hills tour. Some random bloke with insane hair took us around some famous people's houses. We saw Dr Phil's house, Michael Jackson's place and a few other non real celebrities (i.e. we don't know them in this country).

Took a cool snap of the Beverly Hills sign too!

Thursday, 9 July 2009

Hopped on another bus and headed down to LA. I am flying from LAX in about a months time to Perth so I figured I should check it out. Dan and Ted my new friends from San Fran wanted to go up to the Hollywood sign and take some snaps so we trekked up to the sign and did just that!

Thursday, 2 July 2009

I hopped on a boat to Alcatraz today for the day tour. Gotta say I was looking forward to this one, place where some of the most infamous criminals in American history were incarcerated? Sign me up! So I did the walking tour and learnt about the Battle of Alcatraz when the inmates went nuts and managed to take over the prison. How Native Americans decided to claim it for a bit and make it their home. I went in Al Capone's cell, not too shabby... Nowadays though it is a bird sanctuary as there are no natural predators like cats and other nonsense on the island. If you get a chance to go to Alcatraz it is definitely worth it!

San Fran!

Yep if you guessed San Francisco you would be right! So far I have been around the markets, up to Pier 39 and had some awesome sea food at a Bubba Gumps restaurant and went in a mini Planet Hollywood with some cool junk inside. Just been walking around and seeing what's going on really.

Yesterday I went on a bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge, it was (as you can see below) very sunny... Good ride though extremely windy on the bridge. Got to the other side and cycled through Sausalito the little town just north of the bridge, then on round to Tiburon where I had some mega fish and chips and got the ferry back to San Fran. Wicked!

Guess where I am!

This is a picture of a famous city, the roads and hills should give it away quite quickly! Where am I?

Middle America

Just got off my Greyhound bus from Minneapolis to San Francisco! I think the trip took in 9 states and was about 2,200 miles long, it did take over 56 hours! I saw this at a truck stop and thought it looked like classic Americana so took a snap.

Whilst of the bus I sat next to a bloke covered in tattoos... he asked me where I was going and I said "San Fran, where have you come from today?" he looked at me and said "Oh I just got released from the state penitentiary." I studied his face but he seemed pretty legit about the whole deal. Later I would learn that ex-cons get a Greyhound ticket to anywhere they want in the country on leaving prison so they can get home. I asked him if he was going to get his tats coloured in and he said "No" in a rather unimpressed voice... I guess I should have realised from the 88's where his sideburns would have been (88 for HH or 'Heil Hitler') and the swastika on the crown of his head that he might not be that into colours...

The Zombies of Minneapolis

I arrived in Minneapolis a few days ago, staying in a nice hotel just outside of down town. Clean nice place by all accounts. Met up with some fellow deviants from dA and got down to some zombying!

A good time had by all!

En route to the North I figured I would pop into Chicago and see what's going on.

This is what I found. That is all.

Niagara Falls

I headed over to Niagara Falls yesterday. En route we popped into a vineyard where they make 'Ice Wine' which is a super sweet wine drunk with dessert. Apparently it is very expensive but they gave us a swig anyway, very nice! If I remember correctly there are 10 times as many grapes in it than regular sweet wine.

There was the option of taking a helicopter over the falls so I grabbed that opportunity, however the most interesting thing I found whilst there was the Burger King... naturally!

Thursday, 14 May 2009

Hello Canada! Figured I would go up to Toronto to see what all the fuss is about, can't really say that it's all that at the moment. Clean but a bit boring really. I am going to head over to Niagara Falls sometime this week and check that out though so that should be fun!

Below is a snap of City Hall in down town Toronto, which is a pretty nice building surrounded by some lovely gardens, I might upload a pic of the gardens later.

Central Park

So long New York, had some fun, saw some good stuff, went up the Empire State Building, saw Ground Zero (still a building site), saw the Statue of Liberty. But off to pastures new, plenty more of the US to explore!

Times Square

Headed down to Times Square today, as usual totally chaotic! Pretty awesome all the same, nothing quite like it back home in the UK that's for sure.

New York, New York

So I arrived in New York yesterday, first day of travelling! First impressions are it's a hell of a big place! It looks exactly like it does in the movies, apart from the explosions, it's certainly very chaotic. 6-8 lane roads in the middle of a city boggles my mind a bit I think. I found my hostel (in Harlem) quite easily after a super expensive cab took me (the long way round no doubt). Seems like a nice area, everyone is very polite... I guess it ain't so gangster here after all. [Edit: New York is very safe, the Mayor at the time I was there was Bloomberg, he said "If you attack a tourist you go to prison no ifs and no buts" a pretty cool policy.]

The photo below is looking up at the glass roof of the Guggenheim museum just off Central Park. It's really not that interesting of a place but looks weird from the outside so I figured I would check it out. Fun movie fact, Will Smith ran around these slopes after he tracks down an alien in Men in Black!
